Centrality of community

Seeking conversion you are really asking the Jewish community to accept you as a Jew. In the process of conversion you are learning what it means to be a Jew and putting that learning into practice.

Most of the blessings seem to be in the plural, most of the prayers during the service are about the community praising, asking for something from or thanking God. Traditionally services require a minimum of 10 adults in order to proceed, meaning that if there is no community, there is no prayer.

I do think that part of what has allowed the Jewish people to survive is this incredible focus on the importance of community. It is certainly a large part of its appeal as well. Supporting each other through the worst of situations has enabled survival as a community even when destruction seemed inevitable.
